Restraint has a long and well-documented place in bara, the Japanese tradition of art devoted to mature, heavily built men, and Chain & Flesh makes it the spine of an entire theme. Gengoroh Tagame, the genre's best-known author outside Japan, built much of his work around bondage and the balance of power between men. The wider conventions hold here too: grown men rather than boys, broad frames, body hair treated as an asset, physical effort as the engine of desire, and a sensuality that lives in posture before it moves into gesture. What this theme keeps is the bulk, the maturity and the effort. What it sets aside is the workplace. The strain that bara usually draws from hauling, lifting or labouring comes here from a body pulling against metal.

Chain is a precise choice, and it produces something rope or leather would not. It is cold where skin is hot, heavy where the body is tense, and it gives nothing back. That contrast of temperature and resistance is the whole premise of the theme. It also suits the genre's old preference for stillness charged with intent. In bara, a restrained body is read through what it holds, the set of the shoulders, the pull in the forearms, the way weight is carried, and desire shows in how a man bears the restraint rather than in what he does next.

This is the second of three chapters, the stretch where tension climbs instead of being introduced. The first chapter lays down the premise and the last one tips it over. The middle is where the theme's two verbs, strain and yield, start pressing against each other. Forty-two plates give that build real room, so the pressure has space to accumulate rather than arriving all at once.

Chain & Flesh sits within Raw, a series that gathers several themes. This chapter is for readers who come to bara for the alpha figure, for heavy bodies measured against something heavier still, and for the particular charge of power exchanged between men who are equally strong. It speaks to those who enjoy watching pressure build, who find the moment before surrender as compelling as the surrender itself, and who take the meeting of cold metal and warm skin seriously, as a subject worth dwelling on.

Chain & Flesh is a season of InkDazzle: homoerotic art generated plate by plate, then composed as a chapter you read in order. Every season exists in three registers (suggestive, explicit and anime): the same men, drawn at the intensity you pick. Visitors read the opening plates; members read the whole season, and everything published before it.

The plates are read in order, one after the other, and the register can be switched from this page without losing your place. A season that belongs to a series carries its name at the top. That is the thread to follow if you want the men to come back.
